Suresh Kumar’s 10th floor apartment at Madhapur was redesigned over messenger apps, and it was exactly what they wanted.

When businessman Suresh Kumar decided to relocate to Hyderabad from Kuwait, his instant choice was the spacious three-bedroom 2,350 sq. ft apartment in a plush locality at Madhapur.

Living with Suresh on the 10th floor is wife Satya, daughter Shruthi, father-in-law Kameshwar Rao and mother-in-law Lakshmi.
They had bought the apartment in 2007 and it had been let out all these years. But they always knew that one day, this would be their home once they decided to move back to the city. “While the apartment was good looking, certain parts of it were still quite old-fashioned. Hence, we needed to upgrade it,” recalls Suresh.
That’s when he got in touch with interior designer Sudha Moola. “Suresh and wife Satya gave me a free hand when it came to designing their apartment. The only thing they asked me was to make the house spacious and minimal,” says Sudha. Every decision they took was done using messaging apps as Suresh was still living in Kuwait back then.
Says Suresh, “When I saw the house for the first time after it was redesigned, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything, to the last detail, was exactly as it was told it would be — be it the colour patterns or the way spaces where managed.”
The living room, or as Suresh likes to call it “the international room”, is filled with souvenirs the couple brought back from each of their foreign trips. “The entire credit for this goes to my wife. It was her idea to start collecting souvenirs and when I look at it today, I know it’s all worth it,” he says.
The one room the couple was quite sure about was what they wanted in their daughter’s room. Satya elaborates, “We were very certain we wanted our daughter’s room to be of a particular shade of purple. Also, one other thing we insisted on was a slab by the window side, so we would sit there and enjoy the breeze.”
Each morning, the family sits in the little sit-out, which even has a hammock chair, to enjoy the morning breeze. Says Suresh, “Every day, we make it a point to hang out here till 10 in the morning. Since we live on the 10th floor, the breeze is pretty strong and also the view of the upcoming metro and the vast expanse of Hitec City are quite stunning.”

Sudha Moola, Head of Kozy Design Studio into a candid talk over her professional journey. We threw some important questions at her and seized some very interesting answers, worth a read. Have a look...

Narrate us about your inspiration for designing, the beginning and journey of your fabulous career?

My journey began a long time ago; I first realized my passion for furniture designing at the age of 12-13, when I used to see my mother ardently following magazines on interior designing which featured American homes fully decked up with posh wooden interiors and furniture. To this day, I am insanely curious and always researching on current market trends – transition from traditional to classic / contemporary designs, not to forget our signature projects.

From a very humble beginning of designing and executing Kitchen Interiors, I started with Kozy Kitchen’s, being the first Young Entrepreneur to start Modular Kitchens. Soon home makers were fascinated with the trend of beautiful, aesthetically, conventional and convenient designing. Being a woman, we could easily understand the requirements of kitchen designing and successfully handled singular projects like apartments, villas, showrooms, model houses at the start. These days we are handling big size projects for total turnkey interior solutions of villas, apartments, commercial showrooms, hospitals etc., I have come a long way….thanks to all our clients who have patronised our services and have imbibed trust in us.

Art changes with time, the modes of representing them also change, what about design? Did your design philosophy change with time?

Yes, of course design do change time to time, but again we need to definitely use ancient methods along with upgraded new technology with creativity in creating spaces and achieve spectacular work. The design philosophy for any designer changes apparently with minimalistic nature of work.
Intense yearning for knowledge, tireless perseverance, passion for excellence, sustenance in all adversities & stiff competition has created the sparkle & made us stand tall in the crowd.

Take us through your clientele and let us know how your scope changes with changing status, budget, time frame and requirements?

The emotional connect with our clientele gives us all the more reason to give out something new every time and all the time. Our clients allot us an area and we create spaces with a touch of beauty to it. It’s a matter of communication and ultimately everybody wants the same outcome – A Stunning Design and Client’s Satisfaction - Durability Assured. Efficient methodology in execution, quality in work, firm commitments & timely deliveries has earned us a trust among our clients which we highly cherish.

Tell us about your turnkey projects, Let us know about some challenging projects you are currently working on ?

We have successfully completed around 700 turnkey Interior Projects from design to execution. Our works stand out in terms of utilizing traditional Joinery techniques along side high tech machinery. Our team boasts proudly about the Bespoke nature of our projects.

Do you need inputs on requirements from all clients or you adopt a rather aggressive approach and spoon-feed the clients based on the space, location and positioning of the premises?

Yes, we need inputs as client requirements and we utilize a standard questionnaire to collect the details and understand the mindset and the image customers have with respect to the final output they desire of the space.Being in this field for 15 years, I feel every site is a learning experience. In short, my clients are my strength.

Has the winds of change affected Indian customers, if so, how much and what are the repercussions?

Though India is inheriting Italian, Chinese etc. kind of designs, many designers still remain traditional by heart and if affected, it is still fine to adapt things as they are. Well, we need to remember one thing that there is lot of difference between Indian culture and other countries. So, at the time of designing, Indian way of using art and recognizing culture is the best way while taking up global aspects to produce an end result rich in diversity.

What are the steps you follow in the design process, your USP? What is your strength?

Generally at the time of design process, I follow contemporary Indian style with space management.
To reflect the personality of the client is the part of my strength.

What learning you had through your professional journey as an entrepreneur which you would like to advice to new generation ventures?

Updating ourselves with travelling, attending seminars, workshops and exhibitions all are must in this creative field. Of course for all budding designers it's a vast ocean to swim. To reach targets, working efficiently and meeting time lines is important to achieve success. We should be honoured for the fact that we designers are also creators and need to be proud of ourselves.

What importance do you allocate to magazine like Kitchen Desire in educating the business organisations and consumers at large and benefits of associating with it?

I feel the magazine gives more knowledge and inputs to a common layman. Besides, it also helps the business caste to engage and expand their businesses. These magazines give a platform to interior designers, dealers, manufacturers, and design interns to showcase and interact.

A plush 800 sq-ft beauty parlour with cabins for spas and facials this was one of the many achievements of thirty-eight year old Sudha Moola from Hyderabad who was recently awarded Bharat Vikas Ratan Award, which is given for individual achievements for economic and social development. She received the award in New Delhi on September 22.

An interior designer by profession, Sudha Moola was felicitated for her designs, interiors, space management concepts etc., which she shares with her viewers through a series of TV episodes.

“Not just city folks, even people living in villages have made use of the tips and ideas I shared colour combinations, making the best of whatever furniture they have and more,” says Sudha Moola, who has been in this profession for the last 15 years.

Sudha Moola had received a letter to send in her resume and documents nominating her for the award even last year, but she admits she wasn’t ready. “I was scared, I wasn’t sure I was up to the mark. But this year I decided to do it. The officials reviewed my work spanning ten years, checked out the videos and then made a decision. At the ceremony, I believe I was the only one from Andhra and Telangana,” she says. “Now I want to concentrate on doing much better work than before and also serve people with my work,” she adds.

With an aim of marrying tradition with modernity, Ramchandra Reddy brought down the interiors of his 30-year-old house and gave it a contemporary theme.

A builder himself, (owner of RV Nirman Pvt Ltd), Ramchandra lives in the newly renovated house with his wife Sirisha and daughters Chaitra and Abhignya.
Once inside, what impresses the visitor is how the artefacts and furniture of the house — mostly from the old property — fit perfectly in the modern settings.

The antique carved door opens to a small living room which gives an illusion of space thanks to a mirror on one side. The curtains for the room have been custom made to match the old yet very well-kept sofas. “We have preserved the old artefacts from the previous house,” says Sirisha.

A glass door opens to a spacious hall whose corner serves as the dining hall. On the same line is the prayer room of the family, which has a huge glass painting by artist Kameshwar Rao. On the opposite side is the media room which is the favourite corner of the family. Plush white sofas designed to give a home theatre touch, a surround sound system and sliding doors complete the room. “The white sofa is in accordance with the light-coloured walls and the Italian marble panel next to the television,” says Ramchandra.

A flight of stairs with a Tanjore painting on one side, leads to the three main bedrooms. While Chaitra’s room has a low bed with a black and white contemporary theme, Abhignya’s room is adorned with her favourite brown all over.

The master bedroom, meanwhile, has a lot of wooden panels which imparts a warm feeling. An interesting feature is the use of mirror murals in all the rooms. The wardrobes have mirror finishes and the master bedroom has a mirror-cum-wooden partition door.  The lounge on the same floor boasts of a ‘Gangalam’ which has been with the family for over 100 years.However, Sirisha’s favourite are her gardens. From her own vegetable garden to the lush green lawns, she pours her heart in their maintenance. “My mom does everything. She was the one who was involved in every step of the renovation” says Chaitra. A smiling Sirisha adds, “Well my husband is a builder and has all the knowledge, that just made everything easier.”
